May 17 - 18, 2008 - Trim Painting

This weekend was all about paint. White paint. Slightly off-white paint.

We had a great crew of volunteers this weekend, most of them were under 20 years old. When I first heard that Dan was bringing 5 or 6 teenagers, I was concerned. If we were doing demolition, I wouldn't have thought twice about it. But were were painting, and even using one color still requires concentration and focus. Turns out my concerns were completely unfounded!

Our crew consisted of Dan, his sons Ian and Andrew, his daughter Abbie, his friend Mary Ann and her children Calvin and Roslyn.

Dan and Mary Ann raised some amazing kids. They took their trim painting assignment very seriously and painted the trim with great attention to detail. Mary Ann was a natural leader, giving the girls excellent tips for painting trim. I was so impressed. It was a very productive day.

When we arrived, we saw that the entire back of the house is fully sided, it looks amazing.

I began on Saturday painting the ceilings upstairs before everyone arrived, and had the two bedrooms completed when the crew walked in.

I set Mary Ann, Abbie and Ros to work on the trim in the master bedroom. Dan, Ian, Andrew and Calvin tackled cleaning and prepping the downstairs rooms. I primed the hallway.

We broke for lunch.

After lunch, Mary Ann and Ros had to leave. The remainder of the crew tackled the trim in the second bedroom, as well as the hallway.

Abbie was kind enough to volunteer to babysit in the afternoon so Jeremy could paint. The boys took a break and went to the beach. It appeared as though they actually went in the water, despite the temperature.

Late in the afternoon we managed to complete the trim downstairs in the hallway, dining room and a good portion of the living room. It was truly amazing.

Jeremy went back at the end of the day to look for spots that required touch ups. He was surprised to find that there weren't many at all. What an amazing group!

On Sunday, I painted the walls of the master bedroom and one wall of the second bedroom. Jeremy took over mid-day and I brought the kids home.

Thanks to everyone who helped this weekend. We're really getting close to having the West Wing ready for an open house.
