April 12, 2008 - Linoleum Removal and Wallpaper Removal

This week went by fast. On the agenda for this week is tackling the linoleum removal on the lower level of Equinox, and wallpaper removal upstairs.

We're almost half-way done with our budgeted time! When we left last week, the new dormer looked like this:

Shed Dormer - no windows yet

When we arrived this week, we found that it now looks like this! New windows, trim work started: New Shed Dormer with windows installed

And here is the million several hundred thousand dollar view from the new windows:

We thought it was just going to be us and Dan and his family, but we had two sets of surprise guests! First, early on, Steve and Katie showed up unexpectedly. They were a huge help with the linoleum removal! linoleum removal

Together, they were pulling up huge sections of the old floor to expose the beautiful old hardwoods.

Upstairs Dan and his crew were hard at work removing multiple layers of old wallpaper - and having some fun doing it!

Before we knew it, it was time for lunch! lunch break for hard workers

Then right after we got back to work, more surprise guests! Bill and Sandie (very successful XANGO leaders!) stopped by to bring cake and coffee - and to help us with our demolition! We put them to work right away with the wallpaper removal and saved the coffee break for a little later.

It was well worth the wait! They were so thoughtful, they even brought cups and sugar and cream! We don't have running water yet, so it came in handy! The cake was delicious and the coffee was piping hot.

After cake and coffee, we got back to work on the linoleum removal. We had finished in the kitchen, so we tackled the living room. Here is the before picture:

And here is the after picture of the floor after we removed the linoleum. We were pleased that this floor only contained one layer of linoleum and plywood. The floor used to have a rug or other covering (can you guess where it was?) and was never varnished under the it. It floors are in great shape and will look great after a little patching and refinishing.

The wallpaper removal crew upstairs did a fantastic job! Here are a couple of pictures of their amazing progress.

I'm very proud of all that was accomplished this week! For next week, we'll have to finish the wallpaper removal upstairs - there's one more room to go, and unexpectedly, the ceilings are also covered in wallpaper! We'll have to remove that so our contractor can mud the entire room. He says it'll just fall off the ceiling if we don't remove the wallpaper from the ceiling. Who wallpapers ceilings, anyway?!

Then also next week, we have to demo the interior wall where the kitchen and new half-bath will be in the Equinox unit.

Then, after that we move on to scraping, sanding, priming and painting the exterior trim. We may start this first, depending on if the weather is good.
