May 2nd - 4th, 2008 - It's a wallpaper removal sleepover!
The water was turned on May 1st so we decided that we would spend the weekend at the house in order to get as much done as we could. We went up on Friday after work. We took a picture of the kids enjoying their first meal, a dinner from Costa Vida, at the house.
The kids did really well sleeping in their new room. Adam was really happy to have a big (full) bed to himself, it was quite the big boy bed. Zoe was happy in her pack-and-play. The only issue was they woke up a bit early. However, they were able to keep each other entertained and were content to stay in their room together for a while to let us sleep in until 7:00 AM. It was a cold, rainy and dreary weekend, so it was a bit chilly in the house. Our Rinnai wasn't installed yet, so we didn't have heat. We used space heaters and they heated well enough. I do hope that the weather is a bit warmer next weekend. Jeremy stayed with the kids while I took the first shift of wallpaper removal. However, the first thing I did was to take pictures of all the work that was accomplished during the week. Jim and Larry installed the windows on the water side of Lupine, as well as the new Dutch door.
But the big WOW item of the week was the cabinet that Jim built for our sink.
He used the wide plank pine boards from our attic for the outside of the cabinet but used new wood inside. It is really nice, solid and very unique. We love it. He said we needed to treat it with Penofin - which is a transparent finish that will protect it and will bring out the natural colors.
Here's that view again, from Lupine's sink.
My day was spent with Dan and Jane doing the tedious task of wallpaper removal. We worked all morning on the West master bedroom. The walls had a couple of layers of wallpaper, that had a couple of layers of paint over that. They looked bad, so it all had to come off, but it was anything but easy. Here's the after pictures of the painted wallpaper bedroom.
Here's a picture of one of the walls that ended up being just paint, not painted wallpaper. Whoops!
In the afternoon we worked on the West living room. The wallpaper was pretty easy to get off, especially compared to what we had worked on in the morning! After the kids went to bed on Saturday night, Jeremy and I spent a couple of hours tackling the West dining room. The wallpaper was a lot more porous and came off much easier. There were only three layers. Top Layer: (Isn't it beautiful, can you believe we're taking it off??)
The second layer:
The third layer: (for a moment, I thought this was the wall, and it was painted green, but then I noticed the pattern on it...sigh)
Finally, we could see the drywall!
Sunday morning Jeremy took the kids, so I worked on the West Living Room a bit more. I had almost finished it when it was time to leave to bring the kids home. Jeremy stayed Sunday night and Monday, and continued where I left off. His post will follow.Next week the mudding begins!!
