March 8, 2008 - Demopalooza I
This past weekend we held a ridiculously successful gathering at the house called “Demopalooza I”. “Demopalooza I” was started with an Evite invitation to 25 or so of my closest home-wrecking friends to travel to New Harbor to demolish siding, floors and walls at our recently purchased Guest House. My expectations for the weekend were actually quite low. I didn’t expect many people to show up. If anybody showed up, I figured it would be difficult to “coax” people that it really was OK to tear into a wall with a sledge hammer and a crow bar. Boy, was I wrong!!! By noon on Saturday we had an army of 12 unbelievably hard working folks practically running around the site demolishing pretty much everything in their path.
The list of projects completed is staggering. The entire floor of the loft living room was removed. The floor included a sub-floor constructed of two inch thick planks fastened to the joists with massive nails. No worries. Monkey grabbed a circular saw, an eight pound sledge and a pry bar that would make Andre the Giant proud and turned the floor into toothpicks. The wall between the middle kitchen and living room is gone. The wall between the west wing parlor and basement stairwell is no more. All the drywall for the north side of the middle unit currently resides in the Bristol Transfer Facility. The middle chimney mysteriously disappeared. The loft portico no longer shades the loft. The rear porch, which was hiding some significant sill rot is but a memory. The middle kitchen has been reduced to a single bank of metal floor cabinets. Beautiful pumpkin pine flooring has been revealed. The loft utility room and closet were reduced to rubble by Lindsay, Cynthia and Jane.
I cannot begin to explain how grateful I am to all of those who joined in on our demolition adventure. The spirit on Saturday was one that I’ll never forget. It seemed like everyone there was driven to work harder than the next person. By 5pm Laura and I had to start hinting to people that it was time to call it a day. I think Saturday was a true testament to what a group of bright, highly successful and talented people can do if they all work hard towards a shared goal. By 5:30pm I was convinced that the 12 of us should form some sort of super-company that could truly change the world. Perhaps an alternative energy company that could single handedly end our dependence on fossil fuel? Our group on Saturday included engineering, computer, legal, marketing, building and financial wizards. Hmmmmm.
Demopalooza I was a smashing success!
“Demopalloza II” is scheduled for Saturday March 15th, 2008. Exterior clapboard and shingle siding removal will be the focus. All are welcome!
